Turncoat in Congress

Veteran Republican Sen. Arlen Specter announced today that he will be switching parties, to join the Democrats. Specter was a senior Republican in the Senate. President Obama welcomed the Senator with vigor to the party. This will give the Democrats 59 votes in the Senate. Democrat contender Al Franken is in a marathon recount in Minnesota, if he wins, this will give the Democrats a 60 vote majority that is filibuster proof. This will allow the Democrats to force legislature through congress at will. This gives the Democrats a clear opportunity to successfully implement many of their party platform policy goals. Without a doubt there will be an uprising among Republicans if any filibuster is overridden with the 60 required votes to do. This is another bad sign for the Republican Party, a dramatic shift is appearing across the United States as red states are showing a trend of shifting to blue and traditional republican strongholds are now easily threatened.

Expect Specter to split with the Democrats on occasions as he will more likely be a conservative Democrat. Do not be surprised if he purposely chooses not to cast his vote to create a filibuster proof bill. It is very important to have checks and balances between the branches of government as well as between parties. Hopefully some Democrats hold this American value at heart.

More importantly this is an opportunity for the Democrat party so show wisdom and leadership by including Republicans in the legislature process.
