In defense of prayer
Due to an ever growing concern to be tolerant and inclusive to all, Americans have decided it is necessary to wage a campaign to end a traditional activity that has always been inclusive. An activity that is typically a precursor to an important ceremony; the moment of prayer. Our hypersensitive society has interpreted this as a requirement to pray to the Christian God. This ignorant interpretation is hardly a requirement, for participation in a moment of prayer is completely voluntary. Similar prejudices against moments of silence are unheard of. Simply having the wording of prayer in an activity attracts scrutiny and insensitivity.
It is surprising that American’s would take offense to a time dedicated for self reflection. Today’s society is moving at an alarming rate, with time available for thought and recollection shrinking. Society gorges itself on anything that is quick, easy, and fast. Fast food, fast cars, and fast satisfaction rule the day. America is under the impression that unless you are doing something, you are being unproductive, and this is an American sin. Consequently, taking time out of a ceremony for silent reflection is frowned upon. Anything resembling Christian influence is quickly casted as exclusive, intolerant, and obtrusive. Moments of prayer, which allows for silent prayer or personal reflection, are consequently viewed as intolerant and unproductive. As this childish view strengthens its grip on our society, traditional moments of prayer will find itself slowly squeezed out.
America has reached a hypersensitive state that is regrettably taking it’s toll on the elements of this society that has made it the great country that it is. Americans no longer take the time to stop and think, think about decisions, consequences, benefits, long term; today’s life style is all about satisfying here and now. Time set aside during ceremony’s to contemplate and possibly pray are a great benefit to our lives. It is tragic that our hypersensitivity is robbing us of a vital asset that is not renewable; time to think.
